I'm going to make myself a gert lush gothic castle/mansion/tower thing. I've got a vague idea of what I want to do, but it really depends on where I build it. I don't think there is a cheap alternative to what your're trying to do. You're buying fairly expensive components even without the sonic screwdriver theme. IMO the $100 sonic screwdriver remote is your best bet.
