Pokemon Nuzlocke playthrough

Like any true child of the 90's I grew up loving Pokemon. I've not touched any of the newer games in a while, but still like to dig up the original generation for an occasional nostalgia playthrough. For fun I thought I'd document one, I encourage anyone who wants to do the same.

For the uninitiated, Nuzlocke rules:
  • You must nickname every pokemon (In my case I'm naming after Escapecraft staff/members)
  • If a pokemon faints, it is dead. You must release it or place it in a designated "graveyard" box in the PC, never to be used again.
  • If you run out of usable pokemon the game is over.
  • You can only catch the first pokemon you encounter in an area (defined as any new route or town). If the pokemon faints, you run out of pokeballs, or it just isn't the pokemon you wanted, tough, no second chances.
  • Excessive grinding is discouraged
Part 1
Spoiler! :
Image
Using my real name because I'm boring.

Image
Rival's name is Creeper, the ultimate minecraft themed antagonist.

Image
Chose Charmander as my starter. Named him Wokka

Missed out on any new pokemon for route 1 due to not having pokeballs yet

Image
Caught a Rattata on route 22. Would have preferred a Nidoran, but oh well. Nicknamed Sneakypie

Accidentally killed the Pidgey I encountered on route 2

Chose not to catch the Caterpie I encountered in Viridian forest

Image
Since Brock hard counters both Wokka and Sneakypie, some levelling was required. Wokka evolved at lvl 16

Image
My team just before fighting Brock.

Image
Victory! One badge down, seven to go.

Unable to catch any pokemon in Pewter City

Chose not to catch the Pidgey I encountered on route 3

Image
Caught a Geodude in Mt Moon. I was planning to name my 3rd pokemon after Lord Mountbatten, but Rock beefchest was just too fitting for a rock type. Of course they don't give you enough spaces to fit it all in, so Geodude is now dubbed Rockbeef.

Image
What? Sneakypie is evolving?!

Image
My team upon arriving in Cerulean City. Creeper didn't stand a chance.

Chose not to catch the Metapod I encountered on route 25. I was really hoping for an Abra or a Belsprout.

Image
Time to fight Misty. Relying on Sneakypie to win this one since Wokka and Rockbeef are both at a disadvantage.

Image
Two down, Six to go.

Chose not to catch the Pidgey I encountered on route 5. Would have liked a Meowth, but there are some other place where that's a possibility.

Image
Speak of the devil. My catch for route 6. Nicknamed Tulonsae.

Image
My catch for route 11. Sorry Derigin, but you'll likely end up used for HM01 and not much else.

Image
Rockbeef is evolving!

Next up: the SS. Anne

That's all for now, but I'll try and keep this updated. Again, feel free to post your own adventures.
Part 2
Spoiler! :
Image
Nooo! Wokka! Damn criticals :(

Image
Rest In Peace

Oh god, a lvl 32 Dugtrio just wiped me out. Things just went from bad to a whole lot worse. Rockbeef was the only survivor, and only barely.

Image
Image
Image
It's all up to you now Rockbeef

...Water pokemon, this isn't good

Image
Fuuuu...

Image

So ends my Nuzlocke challenge. I honestly didn't expect it to be cut short so brutally fast.
Graveyard
Spoiler! :
Wokka - lvl 25 Charmeleon
Tulonsae - lvl 21 Meowth
Sneakypie - lvl 26 Raticate
Derigin - lvl 16 Sandshrew
Rockbeef - lvl 28 Graveller

This sounds like an interesting challenge that I may have to undertake! I've been looking for an excuse to start playing the old pokemons again. (just something about that midi music that warms the soul)

Which Pokemon version is that? I have gold, fire red, and leaf green sitting around somewhere...

Good old blue version, the one I had as a child.

Any version will do though, they're basically all the same game. Meet professor [tree], get pokedex, collect 8-16 badges, defeat team [X], fight your rival a bunch, become champion, attempt to "collect 'em all" before they can introduce another new batch.

I used an emulator, so I was running it on my PC. I just used print screen to capture the screenshots.
