Car insurance and buying a car.

Im 16 atm in half a year im 17 and am doing my drivers license and getting a car costs alot apparently beacause of insurance so could someone clear me up about? thank you.

I don't know how things work in Europe, but here in the States used cars (never buy new) are typically several thousand dollars. Car insurance is actually a pretty cheap monthly payment with costs varying depending on your driving history.

The most expensive thing about buying a car is buying the actual car. Not the insurance that you have to get.

Its because statistics show that younger people have accidents more than older people so insurance is massive.

It's the same here in the sense that younger people have a higher insurance due to them being stupid and new behind the wheel. That's normal and how it should be as teens are more of a hazard than an experienced driver.

However, I really doubt that the UK charges thousands and thousands of pounds a year just for insurance and charge very a little for the actual car. That just doesn't seem to make much sense.

There is always a market for old beaters, because it's the new drivers who buy them. You can sell any old bucket around here as long as it will pass inspection and has a working radio to some kid somewhere.

Yeah, here you can pick up a small (old) car for about €1000, maybe less.

Your insurance could cost up to twice that for a year.

Well, you can buy a useable used car in Canada for around 2-3k (canadian dollars), but car insurance for a used car is also around $2000 per year (and that's with the good driver discount and being older than 25 and not driving very much). I think it's a lot more for young, new drivers. In the US, the insurance was much, much cheaper.

Don't know about the UK, tho.

Insurance will be cheaper on a smaller car, say a 1-litre. Not sure how big the engine is on that thing.

Dont buy a car thats less them £1OOO and older then the 9O's if you want it to last and not cost a fortune fixing. Buy if possible a small hatchback or 4 door. Do your research on the car as well, does the timing belt go after 1OO OOOk? How much fuel does it suck? Does it do donuts?

Another thing to remember it auto or manual gearbox. Manual is more work but more fun and cheaper but auto is easy as piss and perfect for traffic and more expensive.

If your strapped for cash go for third party insurance only, this means that the only thing covered is when you hit a merc you dont have to pay the 8OK. This also means that if you car is stolen, burned, hailed etc you dont get anything for it. But its only (for me in Aus $65O)

No idea how your rego and pink slip works but for me its another $8OO. Also keep in mind maintince the older the car the more it will break down.

I have owned a car for almost 3 years and it is the best thing i have, you just cant be to afraid to throw some money and commen sence its way.

Well insurance is determined by your driving history and, to an extent, your GPA. So if you got good grades, it's less expensive.
