This is about as well as I can draw with my eyes open. Or maybe it's a bit better.

Good stuff though, I just need to practice.

Thanks for posting that Jake! I like the music :)
And *obligatory compliment for incredible artwork*
What brushes are you using, btw (mainly for the clouds)? And what'd you do with the water? It looks like you kinda stretched areas so it looked like reflections changing on the waves?

I just drew this in paint quickly. It's a boat. At sunset. Though the boat looks kinda retarded :/

This one took a bit longer:

They look pretty cool if you blur them heaps haha. You can't do too much blending with paint, unfortunately.

I used this brush pack for the clouds: http://javierzhx.deviantart.com/art/Clo ... s-34277964
Everything else is just the default chalk brush.
No fancy trickery for the waves, I just tried to paint them with some volume.

I have not, although I may try and research him. I really enjoy fantasy/sci fi landscapes too. Probably to a fault since it's practically all I paint. My figure and portrait drawing is pretty poor by comparison.

Those are pretty good. Obviously you don't have much rendering going on, but your composition, colours and perspective are pretty solid. If you used a program with variable opacity and better range of brushes I recommend GIMP: http://www.gimp.org/) you could turn those into something awesome.

Define rendering and composition? :P

Oh, new version is good. WHICH TO CHOOSE?! :O :S

Rendering is indicating shapes as though they were in 3D space. It's basically shading and detailing.
Composition is how you arrange everything on a page in order to be visually interesting.
You may have seen during the video at one point I flip the canvas a bunch of times. That was to check whether the composition was balanced. I ended up adding a small town on the left island to help draw some of the focus away from just the big hilltop.

Ah, ok. Thanks. I liked the cloud above the bridge, too.

I've been playing around with the GIMP -> it's a fair bit better than paint for this sort of thing haha. I managed to get a fairly decent looking sky, and mountain. Water is a biatch to do, though. And I can't get components of the image to blend together. It end up looking like a crappy collage, with a photo of a mountain plasted clumsily on a child's crayon-sketched sky :/

Water is a biatch to do, though.
Understatement.

Here are just some of my earlier attempts to get it right:

http://jakeneal.files.wordpress.com/201 ... =600&h=338
http://jakeneal.files.wordpress.com/201 ... =600&h=450
http://jakeneal.files.wordpress.com/201 ... =640&h=453
http://jakeneal.files.wordpress.com/201 ... =600&h=424
http://jakeneal.files.wordpress.com/201 ... =640&h=360

(As a side note; I think it's quite encouraging that even though these are only a few months old, they look much worse than anything I'm doing at the moment. Hopefully that's a sign that I'm making good progress. I can only hope for the same kind of improvement a few months from now.)

Well, to me, that looks very much like water done right... it looks like it's flowing. If those are much worse than what you're doing currently, then yes, you're making good progress haha. That's impressive.

EDIT:
Another attempt at a sunset, this time with gimp. I'm able to get the sun to look better, but I cut out most of the water because the reflection didn't look right. Then there's the sun blur-like effect, like you get with photos, that I added near the end because it looked cool :)
