Does this look reasonable?

Post by Maykxor » 12 Oct 2012, 11:14

So I finally submitted to the idea that I am going to need a new computer and plan to purchase one some time early next year. After going through the painstaking process of trying to figure out what I should get, I came up with this...

Note: I am absolutely no good what so ever as to what makes for a good gaming computer and honestly have no idea what I should be looking for other than good ram, graphics card, and memory. I need your guy's help in determining if this is a decent computer given that ALL I really will be using it for is gaming. I'd greatly appreciate any advice, suggestions, or what not however, I am trying to stay under the $2200 range.

Looks like a very nice build, not quite top of the line but pretty damn close. The question now is could you get it cheaper if you shopped around?

Oh and I'd consider dropping one of those hard drives in favor of a solid state one. Installing an extra storage drive later down the road is no trouble, transferring your OS to a faster drive is more of a challenge.

Good idea, In fact looking at their offers, because of a windows 8 pre-order which I had on the selection, I get
128GB SanDisk SATA III 6.0Gb/s SSD - 490 MB/s Read & 350 MB/s Write
as a free upgrade reducing the price to 2076! :D
I'll definitely have to keep comparing though.

I'd definitely drop using a Windows 8 OS, because of basically what this thread summarizes.

Windows 7 is very good. I prefer XP personaly but 7 is more usefull due to the updated drivers and such on modern PCs.

Get windows 8 and be shunned for all time.

Only thing is that's a bloody expensive video card, if you aren't running top of the line rendering software or crazy animation software, you won't even come close to capacity on that card, my advice would be to go for a slightly lower card, the price almost halves even if you take a 680, you won't feel the difference and you can save yourself up to about $500. Other than that, nice build.

Well, I do plan on continuing my videos and it would be nice to have a higher quality than the 480p. Don't know how much that'll take CPU wise, but I figured, might as well get the better graphics card so that I can be 100% sure that i wont run into any issues. (That and I get Borderlands 2 free with this one XD)

When I say high end rendering I mean full HD 1080p crazy rendering, this thing will run crysis 2 on full settings and it won't even hit the cap. Plus free borderlands 2 gives you a difference of only $470 =P .That shouldn't really figure into something that price. The other thing to bear in mind is this will output a sickening amount of heat, so you will need to spend yet more money on cooling the thing.

Also, just so you know, that 4GB GPU isn't necessary. A 1GB can get you playing any game on or near max settings... but I guess if you have the money and if you really want anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing, then I guess it'd be "worth it". But honestly, those cards cost nearly a grand, don't they?

but I figured, might as well get the better graphics card so that I can be 100% sure that i wont run into any issues.
-Maykxor, 20 Oct 2012, 18:48

You won't run into trouble with even 2GB. :P

Well, I always have the option of blutooth keyboard and mouse. iPod, i'll just unplug the keyboard. and external hdd I won't be using except for backups, again I can unplug the keyboard. Plus, aren't splitters a thing? Or not for USB?

bluetooth mice.. ugh. I am a wired mouse / keyboard user only. yes splitters are a "thing" but a bad "thing". I avoid them if I can, especially usb2 speed ones.. ugh.

You get an extra 2 usb ports built into that case I believe.
*edit*
Plus that motherboard comes with 8 (6x usb 2.0, 2x usb 3.0). Should be plenty.

Re: Does this look reasonable?

Yeah, my current computer has eight motherboard USB ports with another four ontop, and often in situations I find myself having to rearrange USB devices since I don't have enough room on my motherboard to keep everything plugged in at once.

So yeah, having eight-ten USB ports on a desktop seems most ideal, most of the reasoning behind the fact I have to reorder all my USB appliances frequently probably just has to do with my general disorganization.
